Prenatal & Postnatal Classes

What can you expect to learn?

Well, some of the topics might seem like ‘stating the obvious’ or stuff you already know, but the group setting will mean a fresh perspective, and maybe the answers to questions or scenarios you hadn’t thought of.

You will learn about keeping healthy throughout pregnancy, including healthy eating, exercise and relaxation ideas for pregnancy and birth, and also information to help you make your birth plan, such what pain relief is available, and your options in labour. You will also get advice on caring for your new born and breastfeeding.

You’ll be able to talk about your plans and any worries you have with a doctor and other parents-to-be who are expecting babies.

Do I need antenatal classes if I’ve already had a baby?

Antenatal classes are not just for first-time mums-to-be. If you’re having another baby, you may benefit from going again. Classes can be especially useful if you plan to give birth differently this time – if you had to have a caesarean the first time, for example. Classes may also be helpful if there is a big gap between your pregnancies.

More than just a great place to meet other parents-to-be

Antenatal classes aren’t just about breathing exercises and learning how to change a nappy, how to manage different situations after birth – they are also a great opportunity to make lifelong friendships with other mums going through exactly the same mum-to-be (and then new mum) hurdles as you.

Who can attend antenatal classes?

Some antenatal groups are just for mums, others are for couples’, others are for those who do not have English as a first language.

Most antenatal classes start when you are 24-30 weeks pregnant. If you’re expecting more than one baby, or you and/or your baby have problems it’s advisable to start classes earlier, before 24 weeks, because your babies are more likely to be born early.

After your baby is born: postnatal parenting education classes

These classes are usually for anyone who is in a parenting role, so they are suitable for mums, dads, grandparents, step-parents and carers. It covers a range of childhood emergency situations; from choking and unresponsiveness to fever and meningitis. First aid course is recommended both for prospective parents, and those who already have children.

Infant Nutrition – Introducing Solid Foods Classes

These courses are designed for a parent or carer to attend with their baby. Anyone responsible for a baby as they face the transition from milk to solid foods is welcome. It does not matter if you have already started giving your baby solids when you come to the course, or if your baby is breastfed or bottle-fed.

Subjects covered generally include:

  • What foods babies need, how much and how often to feed them and when to start solid food;
  • Infants’ nutritional requirements and the importance of both breastfeeding and formula in meeting them;
  • Allergies;
  • Baby-led weaning – skipping purees and starting straight with finger food.
